"Buried deep in a knot of streets close to the Ben Youssef complex
and Musée de Marrakech,
Dar kawa's hard-to-find address may seem daunting.
But for visitors wanting to feel the true pulse of the medina,
few locations beat it.
Opened in 2011,
the riad is a collaboration
between Belgian textile designer Valerie Barkowski
and
architect Quentin Wilbaux,
who helped restore the 17th-century Saadian house.

In a city infused with colour,
the pale slate-coloured zellige and
dove -grey woodwork in the courtyard are refreshing.

Of the four rooms, we plumped for the Olmassi Suite,
for its applique rug and African furniture.
On the roof terrace,
escape the afternoon heat on the antique day bed."
